Salt tectonics - southern North Sea Interpretation

VSA Author: Rob Butler
Date Created: 2020-01-21

Folds and mini-basins formed in response to movement of underlying salt. In this interpretation the salt was initially deposited in rift basins but has been evacuated as sediment has accumulated (”down-built”) on top. The salt has migrated up the old half-graben margins, forming salt walls and domes together with locally extruding onto the ancestral sea-bed. Subsequent re-migration of salt from the domes leads to local crestal collapse and faulting. The salt preserved in the section is probably only a small amount of the original volume.
