The BIRPS survey GRID attempted to map in three dimensions the Outer Isles, Moho, and Flannan reflectors within a 100 km by 200km area north of Scotland, covering the areas of West Orkney Basin, North Lewis Basin and Solan Bank High. The line spacings theoretically provide nearly complete 3D coverage at Moho and greater depths, assuming Fresnel zone radii of >3km at these depths. This remains the deepest 3D survey ever attempted. The GRID profiles, together with BIRPS DRUM survey, also provided additional information about the original BIRPS target, the offshore continuation of the Moine thrust zone.
