FInnish Reflection Experiment (FIRE) 2001-2005 Survey

The project FIRE (FInnish Reflection Experiment 2001–2005) studies the structure and evolution of the Earth’s crust in the central and northern part of the Fennoscandian Shield using reflection seismic surveys. Altogether 2104 km of common mid point (CMP) 2-dimensional survey lines were acquired between September 2001 and June 2003 throughout Finland, crossing all major geological units in Finland. (see docs & links for a map). The CMP data were measured using Vibroseis sources with five 15.4-ton vibrators to generate the signal which was a linearly increasing sweep from 12 to 80 Hz. The sweep length was 30 s, the total recording time 60 s, and thus the final correlated record length was 30 s. Source point interval was 100 m. The acquisition was done with split-spread geometry using 362 geophone groups at 50 m intervals with a maximum offset of 9050 m. Data quality is good, with signal penetration to at least 20 s TWT(two-way-travel time) corresponding to 60–70 km depth. At some locations the signal stayed well above the noise level during the complete recordings of 30 s (about 100 km). Therefore, after stacking and processing high signal-to-noise ratios were achieved. The frequency content of the data is wide with frequencies up to 60 Hz present in the depth range of the whole crust (about 15–17 s TWT), and in the upper crust the complete bandwidth of the sweep, i.e. 12–80 Hz, is present. Vertical resolution in the FIRE sections is, therefore, a few tens of metres throughout the crust. The FIRE project was prepared by a consortium led by S-E Hjelt, Pekka Heikkinen and Elias Ekdahl and comprising the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), the Institute of Seismology of the University of Helsinki and the Institute of Geosciences and the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory of the University of Oulu. The seismic contractor in the FIRE project was Spetsgeofizika S.E. together with Machinoexport S.E. The project was apart of a special scheme of converting debts of the Russian Federation to Finland, the debt conversion value of the project being c. 12 Million USD.
