BIRPS MOIST profile Regional Project

Uninterpreted seismic section MOIST (Moine and Outer Isles Seismic Traverse) from the BIRPS surveys (British Institutions Relfection Profiling Syndicate). This was the first line shot by BIRPS, and was recorded at sea just north of the coast of Scotland. It crosses the northern margin of the Caledonian orogen, and was shot and processed by the Western Geophysical Company using a high pressure airgun system, recording to a maximum of 15s (appx 40-45 km depth). The original targets were the major thrusts (as the survey name implies) - and the line was acquired as close as was feasible to the northern coast of scotland to tie to the onshore geology.

Crustal Structure, West Orkney Basin, imaged by MOIST Interpretation

VSA Author: Rob Butler
Date Created: 2021-03-12

An interpretation of the first profile acquired by the BIRPS programme in 1981: MOIST. It images the crustal structure of the West Orkney Basin area, offshore N Scotland. Compare with interpretations of other BIRPS profiles that were acquired over the following years, with increasingly effective acquisition and processing strategies (WINCH-1, DRUM and GRID-17).

Line drawing of the MOIST profile Interpretation

VSA Author: Estelle Mortimer
Date Created: 2008-02-20

A line drawing interpretation of the MOIST seismic reflection profile after Brewer and Smythe (1984) from the principle reflectors. Here, dipping reflectors are approximately in their correct locations, and a conversion to depth is achieved roughly by multiplying TWT by 3. Principle structures are identified as well as the location of the Moho, lower crust and two possible positions o...
